How can I wash my futon mattress cover?

Our futon mattress has a cover which we would like to machine wash. It has a zip, we unzipped it from the inside filling (a type of fibre, messy insulation) but found that where there are hard buttons on the cover, it is attached to the insulation. Removing the buttons seems the only way, but it is nigh on impossible to get the buttons back on afterwards, as they are attached to string which seems to sink deep into the insulation on removal. Is there an easier way?
